Co versus Hi in the Tully-fisher Relation for a Sample of 32 Galaxies

چکیده
As a basic step for establishing the CO-line Tully-Fisher relation for distant galaxies, we made a comparative study of HI versus CO line profiles. Total line profiles of the CO line emission from 32 galaxies have been compared with the corresponding HI emission. We found a good correlation between the profiles of CO and HI. This strongly supports the thesis that CO can be used in the Tully-Fisher relation for distant galaxies where HI observations cannot reach. We also argue that CO can be used as an alternative to HI for un-isolated galaxies such as those in dense cluster of galaxies. Using the B-magnitudes and a recent calibration of the HI Tully-Fisher relationwe give the distances for the galaxies derived from the CO-line Tully-Fisher relation and compare them with the corresponding HI distances.

Abstract. The CO Tully-Fisher Relation for the Virgo Cluster
A comparison between the CO and HI Tully-Fisher relation for a sample of 30 Virgo galaxies shows no significant difference concerning the intrinsic scatter. The distance moduli from both relations after correcting for the sample incompleteness bias agree within the errors and also show no significant difference with previous studies of the Virgo cluster using a complete sample. The CO total lin...

متن کاملEffects of galaxy interaction on the Tully - Fisher relation : CO vs H I linewidths
We investigate effects of galaxy-galaxy interaction on the Tully-Fisher relation. The HI linewidth in interacting galaxies is significantly broader than the CO linewidth, and the HI to CO linewidth ratio is proportional to the strength of interaction. This provides different distances to galaxies measured by the Tully-Fisher relation with the CO and HI linewidths. Distances derived from the HI ...
متن کاملThe faint end of the Tully - Fisher relation
We have studied the relation between HI linewidth and optical luminosity in two samples of dwarf galaxies, with special attention to the accuracy of the inclination correction. The first sample consists of rotationally supported galaxies, and has DDO 154 as a prototype. They have HI linewidths significantly larger than predicted by an extrapolation of the Tully-Fisher relation. The deviation fr...

This paper is primarily a study of the effect of a bar on the neutral hydrogen (HI) content of starburst and Seyfert galaxies. We also make comparisons with a sample of " normal " galaxies and investigate how well starburst and Seyfert galaxies follow the fundamental scaling Tully-Fisher (TF) relation defined for normal galaxies. 111 Markarian (Mrk) IRAS galaxies were observed at the Nançay rad...
